The Coquí is a very small singing tree frog mostly indigenous to Puerto Rico and whose unique sound gives it its name. Only the male emits the mating call...Contrary to popular myth the frogs do exist in other Caribbean islands but nowhere do they figure so prominently in the popular culture. It is the sentimental symbol and mascot of Borikén. Patently, this tiny amphibian with bulging eyes and unwebbed toesis no ordinary frog: his nearly transparent skin changes color protectively to match the surroundings. Conventional wisdom insists that while the coqui may survive if taken off his native island it will never sing...
There are many species of Coquí with different colors and particular sounds..During the day the Coqui likes to hide in moist foliage, without so much as a squeak. But as the sun goes down the Coquí tunes up and fills the Puerto Rican nights with its call, it sings us to sleep with its nightime lullaby...perhaps a thank you for our love.."ko-kee..ko-kee...ko-kee.."
